Protecting both our kids and our oceans š³
At EkatĀ &Ā Magda, we stand for the protection of our children and our environment. We conscientiously designed our sunsuits and hats with both of these ideas in mind, creating pieces that block harmful rays from our sensitive kidsā skin with materials that are sustainable and minimally impactful to our world.Ā
While doing research in the making of EkatĀ &Ā Magda, we went back to the basics on sun protection, sunscreens and their impact on Mother Earth. We want to share some of our findings so you too can stand with us in our effort to keep our kids happy and healthy under the sun, and looking cute while doing it!
UVA & UVB
To summarize what we found, and not to bore you with the extensive science behind it, we will break it down. The sun shines light down to the earth and part of that light consists of invisible UV rays. UV rays are what cause tans, burns and other forms of damage to the skin, especially to the delicate skin of our little humans. Of these rays there are two types that are harmful to the skin, UVA and UVB. UVA is the majority of the rays that we are exposed to and it causes skin aging and wrinkling while UVB causes sunburns and cataracts. Both UVA and UVB contribute to skin cancer which is sadly becoming more common in young people. Two types of skin cancer cells account for about 90 percent of all skin cancers and often appear on the head and neck. With this information under our belts, we created hats along with our sunsuits to be worn in combination for fuller coverage from the sun.
PROTECTIVE FABRICS
What really is the best way to safeguard against dangerous UV rays? Sun-protective clothing has shown time and time again to be the most effective way to stay protected and, unlike sunscreen, you never need to reapply! This launched our sunsuits and hats into action. We curated fabrics that are certified with the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 50+, blocking 98% of both UVA and UVB rays. Most sunscreens only protect against UVB rays. Sun- protective clothing like ours works overtime to shield kids from both forms of harmful radiation. Not only do sunscreens lack full coverage from UV rays, but the Food and Drug Administration does not recommend sunscreen for infants at all. Infant skin is so delicate that adverse reactions like rashes are much more common. This information and more was taken into full account when we created EkatĀ &Ā Magda. We are devoted to protecting our kidsā vulnerable skin while granting them the necessary freedom of playing in the great outdoors.
CONSIDERING THE OCEANS
Not only do our sunsuits protect kids, they also help protect the ocean and its inhabitants. Scientists haveĀ found that common chemicals in many sunscreens are highly toxic to young corals and other marine life. Sunscreens containing these chemicals are already banned in places such as Hawaii and Key West due to the harm they have on coral reefs. Reusable, sustainable, earth friendly products like ours do their part in leaving the world a better place than we found it. Our kids and their future generations deserve the privilege to enjoy nature the same way we were able to.
